Chapter 1: Advantages

INTRODUCTION

In this section, you are going to learn how good offence actually works.

Basketball is not about running plays perfectly or making tough shots.

It is about creating situations where the defence cannot guard everyone.

These situations are called advantages.

Once you understand how to create advantages, the game starts to make more sense.

Every possession has the same goal:

Create an easy shot.

Easy shots are:

- layups
- free throws
- wide-open three-point shots

You won't make every easy shot.

But if your team creates more easy shots than the other team, you will win more games.

Good offence does this on purpose.

It doesn't wait for the defence to mess up.

You are learning how to:

- use spacing to create gaps
- attack those gaps the right way
- force the defence into impossible choices
- create advantages for yourself and your teammates

These ideas apply:

- on fast breaks
- in pick and roll
- in isolation
- in any offence you ever play in
